Jardim Botânico/ Gavea
Jardim Botânico (Botanical Gardens) is today a wealthy residential neighborhood dissected by the highly commercial Rua Jardim Botânico and located toward the Parque da Tijuca mountains, north/west of Ipanema and Leblon, across Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Together with neighboring Gávea, Jardim Botânico has developed a reputation for gastronomical excellence; it hosts Parque Lage, a beautiful, large land of trails leading to the summit of Corcovado, with an imposing early 20th century mansion that is currently a visual arts school.
Vibrant and prosperous, Jardim Botânico is named after Rio’s Botanical Gardens, a major tourist spot in the area, a 340-acre tranquil, shady garden containing 230 thousand plants and trees. The park was created in 1808 by Portuguese prince regent Dom João VI to introduce to Brazil plants from across the world, many of them threatened with extinction today . At Jardim Botânico’s entrance lines a double row of 134 royal palms all more than 160 years old.
This neighborhood stands out also due to its artistic feel –largely thanks to the presence of Globo Headquarters (Brazil’s main media company)-, the large number of detached residential houses - not common in the densely populated south zone of Rio- and mansions that stretch up into the forest. Jardim Botânico is also relevant for being one of the few bairros in Rio not having a favela community in its hillside. Rio’s Planetarium (in Gávea), Horse Race Tracks and Parque da Catacumba (both in Lagoa) are found relatively close to this bairro.
One of Rio de Janeiro's most famous Carnival parades annually strolls through the streets of Jardim Botânico. The bloco calls itself "Axila do Cristo", which translates to "Armpit of the Christ" because Jardim Botânico lies right underneath the right armpit of Rio de Janeiro's most prominent landmark, world famous Cristo Redentor statue (Christ the Redeemer).
